The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Kay, the potter I had just finished a street portrait and started walking off when a woman with a brightly colored shirt and hat called out to me.  It was Kay, who is a potter, and one of the more outgoing and friendly people you’re likely to meet.  She had seen me make a portrait of someone else and wanted me to take a photo of her, as well.  The lighting was terrible and the background incredibly cluttered, so I was feeling a bit dubious.  But then I saw that she had a green umbrella on the ground next to her, so I asked her to hold it behind her and get ready for a close-up.  Charlottesville City Market in Charlottesville, VA
