Allie, the new kid in town
One of the things that you notice fairly quickly about Charlottesville is that the bartenders, other restaurant folk, and the baristas tend to be much closer to fashion’s cutting edge than the rest of us. My wife and I were sitting in a local coffeehouse this afternoon, editing photos (me) and reading the newspaper (her), when I noticed that one of the baristas there was sporting a pretty interesting look: awesome colored hair, big clunky glasses, and some cool earrings. I begged my wife’s patience — and as one might imagine, any woman married to me is certainly patient! — and approached the counter to ask for a photo. Allie seemed surprised at first, and after I explained to her (and to a bystander who seemed rather interested in the project) what I had in mind, she quickly agreed. Her manager let her dash off for a couple of minutes, we found a neutral wall to serve as a background, and she let me make quite a few frames. She told me that she had just moved to town a month or two ago, having simply picked Charlottesville as a place that might be worth moving to; she didn’t know anyone or have any family here, but she did have the job as a barista. Welcome to Charlottesville, Allie!
