The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Alec, the photographer
My wife is a wonderful woman, and she supports me in my photography, so much so that she has come to accept the fact that I may drop out of a conversation with a quick “Be right back!” as I chase down some potential subject for a street portrait. She wasn’t surprised, then, when I disappeared during a conversation with a group of friends to approach Alec and ask for a photo. As I was explaining my project to her, Alec asked if I was the guy who has the Cville People Project blog, which caught me off guard — I started this Tumblr blog quite recently, so not many people have heard of it. As it happens, she had seen it and had even posted a comment on it about a photo that I had posted there the other day. Alec is a photographer herself, and she was a great subject. We talked about photography, my project, and her plans to go to school for journalism. And she just moved to town a few days ago, making her another newcomer.
