The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Eric, the barista
My favorite coffeehouse in Charlottesville is a place called the Mudhouse, both because of the quality of the coffee and decor.  They take their coffee seriously, so I was surprised to see that they had a table set up on the sidewalk across the street from the City Market.  It turns out that they were making handcrafted cups of coffee, one at a time, with hot water and a filter holder.  The coolest thing about it was that they are committed to cutting down on paper waste, so they were serving their coffee in honest to goodness coffee mugs.  You pay for the mug and the coffee, and if you bring the cup back after you’re done, they give you a refund.  If not, you just bought yourself a nice Mudhouse mug and had a good cup of coffee to boot.  Eric was one of the baristas making coffee, and he’s served me before.  He’s quite friendly and was more than willing to let me make a portrait when I explained my project to him. And the coffee was darned good, too!
