Denise, the actor
The Charlottesville City Market is one of my favorite places to go for street portraits: all sorts of Charlottesvillians come to buy local produce there, and I’ve had very good luck finding people who are willing to participate in my project. The first things I noticed about Denise were her cowgirl hat and her pigtails, and when I approached her for a portrait, she agreed straight away. As it happens, she was at the Market trying to drum up some publicity for a one-woman play that she wrote and performs entitled Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales. She’s had some success with it, and she’ll be performing it later this month at Live Arts Charlottesville (www.livearts.org), a theater that hosts some very fine local work. She has a blog (www.deedeeslivingwill.com), as well. The play is autobiographical, and if she’s as good on stage as she is in front of a camera, I have no doubt that it’ll be great.
