The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Elizabeth, the hobbyist farmer
Some people love to have their photo taken and are quite comfortable in front of the camera, while others avoid having photos taken of themselves at all costs. I saw Elizabeth at the Charlottesville City Market and was immediately interested in making a portrait of her: I loved the scarf she had wrapped around her head, and she had a very friendly face. I approached her and asked for a photo, and she agreed without any hesitation, so she and her friend walked with me over to a shady spot. By the time we arrived, Elizabeth seemed like she was having second thoughts, as the idea of being the subject of a portrait set in. I assured her that we would make a photo that she liked, and after a couple of minutes of talking about farming — she described herself as a hobbyist farmer — she began to relax a bit. She said that she had been out farming earlier in the day, and I told her about my recent experience photographing life on a farm as part of a photographic workshop with Bill Allard. Elizabeth is a kindergarten teacher in her day job, and if she’s even half as nice to her students as she was to me, her students must love her.
