The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Alissa, the music fan
Due to a recent job change and some other intrusions from my personal life, I haven’t been able to spend much time lately making street portraits. Now that things have settled down a bit, I’m back wandering the streets with my camera. I saw Alissa sitting outside reading a book on the Downtown Mall, and I was impressed by her concentration — plenty of people were out enjoying the glorious late summer/early fall weather, which would have been enough to have kept me far too distracted to be reading a serious work of literature. I approached Alissa and asked for a portrait, and she was quite receptive to the idea. “I love projects!” she said, and I heartily agreed.
It turns out that Alissa doesn’t live in Charlottesvile, but she said that there is such an incredible music scene here that she frequently comes over from Virginia Beach, where she is a student at Regent University, to take in a show. She’s studying Spanish and Education, and she is planning on transferring back to Virginia Tech within the next couple of semesters. I have no doubt that she’ll be a great teacher, since she has an easy manner and is clearly a warm and friendly person. She was a good model, too!
