The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Jerry, the helper
A couple of months ago, I changed jobs and am now working at the community mental health clinic in Charlottesville. I love my job and the clinic where I work is a good workplace. A week or so ago, we hired a new director of our recovery support department — the team of individuals who perform outreach in the community, provide various types of assistance to folks who are struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, and try to encourage them to seek treatment. I’d seen Jerry around the clinic, and so I recognized him when our paths crossed on the Downtown Mall. He saw my camera and made a comment about my interest in photography, so I took advantage of the opportunity and asked him to participate in my project.
Jerry isn’t from Charlottesville originally; he hails from the far colder climes of Wisconsin. He moved here to be reunited with his middle-school sweetheart, whom he had contacted some time ago after seeing her on a social networking site. The were married a few months ago in a “hockey wedding.” Never having heard of such a ceremony, I had to ask about it, and he told me that they were married at the local ice rink, and then after the ceremony, everyone played hockey to celebrate. I guess you can take the boy of out Wisconsin, but you can’t take the Wisconsin out of the boy.
