The Cville People Project, a documentary photography project, was partially inspired by the Humans of New York website, which is the result of the attempt of one photographer to provide a sort of photographic census of New York City.

However, the focus of this project is somewhat different. I believe that we come to know a city through the people who live there, so my goal is to depict the city of Charlottesville through its inhabitants. I intend to make portraits of as many Charlottesvillians as possible and share them, along with a little bit about each person, on this photoblog.

Feel free to contact me at cville.people@gmail.com if you would like to be part of the project or know someone who would.

You can see more of my photos on my other blog The Things I've Seen and on my Flickr stream. You can also follow me on Instagram (K_A_Sprouse) or Twitter (@K_A_Sprouse).

Amanda, the juggler
As I was making my way down West Main street, headed toward the Downtown Mall, I saw that a new shop had opened in the small complex where Random Row books has its home. I had seen something on the interwebs about a new gallery opening yesterday, just in time for Charlottesvilles’ First Fridays, when all of the local galleries open their doors to present their current shows. Community is a collective and gallery created by four artists working in various media — jewelry, fashion design, painting, drawing, and so on — and Amanda is one of them. She lives in Richmond and works as a critical care nurse when she’s not devoting her time to making and showing and selling art. She told me that she and I share a similar passion for juggling, by which I mean engaging in multiple sorts of activities, ranging from the scientific and medical (she’s a nurse, and I’m a mental health professional) to the more artistic (if I may be so bold as to suggest that my photography is artistic). She outdoes me in that she’s also a gallery co-owner, thus adding entrepreneur to her many skill sets.
There are a lot of beautiful things at Community, and I encourage you to stop by and check it out. And if you do, tell Amanda that I said “Hi.” In the meantime, you can follow them on their Tumblr blog by clicking on the link I included above.
